She is the daughter of Pete Birdie and Simon Peter Roberts. Pete Birdie's family moved to Tallahassee immediately after the Civil War. In the 1980s Barrie and her sister Robbie restored the home of a cousin, Margaret Yellowhair on Martin Luther King Blvd., where Barrie now (2001) lives.
