Classification of Lumber, as adopted by the On Thursday, May 22d., 1873. [left column] Sawn timber shall be put in three classes, which shall be designated as follows: A., B, and C. A.-To be sound, square edged, and square butted, must not show more than two inches sap on either face, free from circular shakes or unsound knots. B.-Timber to be sound, and square butted, to show heart on each face, may show place of wane not to exceed two feet in any one place, and that in not more than three places in any one corner. C.-To be sound, and square butted, not more than three inches in width of wane on a corner, need not show heart on any side or sides. Deals. Deals shall be put in three classes, as follows: Choice, Prime and Merchantable, or Stowage. Choice.-Shall be sound, square edged, and square butted with saw, all heart, with exception of small streaks of sap on one face, comparatively free from knots, and entirely free from shakes and splits, 9 inches and upwards in width, 3 inches and upwards in thickness, and 12 feet and upwards in length. Prime.-Shall be sound, square edge, and square butted, one heart face, three-fourth heart on other face, free from shakes, splits, large or unsound knots, 9 inches wide and upwards, by 3 inches thick and upwards, and 12 feet long and upwards. Merchantable or Stowage Deals. - Must be sound, square edge, and square butted, one heart face, and show heart on other face, free from through shakes, splits and unsound knots, 3 inches thick and upwards by 9 inches wide and upwards, 12 feet long and upwards. Scantling. Scantling shall be put in two classes, viz.: Prime and Merchantable. Prime-Must be square edged, three corners thirds heart on other face, square edge, evenly [right column] sawn, free from through shakes or splits, large or unsound knots, may be 1 1/4 to 3 inches thick by 10 inches wide and upward, and 12 feet and upwards in length. Merchantable-Must be sound, one heart face, evenly sawn, square edged, free from through shakes, splits, or unsound knots, 1 1/4 to three inches thick ten inches and upwards wide, twelve feet and upwards in length. Flooring. Flooring shall be put in three classes, viz: Clear, Prime and Merchantable. Clear-Must be sound, free from sap, knots, shakes, and splits. Prime-Must have one face free from sap, and the opposite Merchantable. Merchantable-Must show half heart on most sappy face the whole length, free of through and round shakes, or unsound knots. All flooring must be sawn plump for any size it is calculated for. Edge Boards Edge Boards must be either one inch or one and a quarter inches thick, any width or length, must be sound, square edged, be free from loose knots or splits, and show heart on both sides. All lumber of a Merchantable quality and upwards, must be square butted. All refused cullings or lumber of a quality be low these classifications to have no class, but be sold on their merits. Your committee advise that in the absence of a suitable legalized inspection law, and pending the organization of a proper law that all lumber inspectors, either localized at mills, or engaged generally in inspection of lumber, shall procure a certificate of qualification from your body, and that their returns under classification adopted by your body, shall be final in sales or delivery made. All sales (either F.O.B., or cost, freight and insurance,) or at mills, shall be on the basis of Pensacola inspection, under such classifications of lumber and timber as shall be adopted by this body. In the absence of special agreements all Sales, shall be considered to be for cash. That in all F.O.B. sales, the delivery will be considered made, when delivered alongside of vessel, and masters or mates have given receipts for same. "In case of failure of purchasers to provide a "vessel or vessels in season, as per contract, and "the respective cargo or cargoes are in readiness "then payment shall be made within thirty days, "and such cargo be considered at risk of pur- chasers."
