To the Honorable the Legislative Council of Florida
The Memorial of John McIver of the City of Tallahassee
Respectfully Showeth
That your memorialist arrived in this country in the month of April last, from the state of North Carolina for the purpose of settling himself on the waters of the Ochlocknee River as a planter.
That at the earnest solicitation of one of the members of your honorable body, your memorialist was persuaded to repair to this place and build several houses for the purpose of boarding and lodging the members of the Legislative Council, which was thus believed would have been convened at this place in the month of May following, pursuant to the proclamation of his Excellency Governor Duval.
That your Memorialist after affecting the establishment at a considerable expense, and the danger of the Indians who then resided in this neighborhood, was informed that the meeting of this Council was ordered deferred to the period of its present sittings.
That your Memorialist in consequence of having expended on a lot of ground, the little funds he had to open a small plantation was necessarily obliged to continue thereon to this time, the greatest part of which at no small expense.
You memorialist can with justice to himself state to your honorable body, that in engaging in this enterprise, he was in great measure prompted thereto by patriotic motive alone, as your memorialist was well aware of the difficulties he was obliged to encounter in arranging such an establishment in a wilderness, for which no benefit whatever accrued in consequence of the (???) already recited to your honorable body.
