General Note
First engine-propelled heavier than air machine to appear on Daytona Beach. Built by Carl Bates and two other men from Chicago. The plane had a 10-HP engine designed by Bates. On March 29, 1909 Bates claimed to have flown a little over a quarter of a mile, between 10 and 20 feet above the ground. The flywheel came loose setting up a vibration which caused the propeller to break loose and shatter the ribs and main rear timbers. The machine landed without further injury to plane or pilot. Because the flight was not substantiated by the required number of witnesses, Bates did not get credit for the first flight from Florida soil.
