Anson was the former Governor of the Arizona Territory, and founder of Tarpon Springs in 1882. Mary Jane came with the Governor and Mrs. Safford to Tarpon Springs in 1882. She was a nurse in the early days of the Civil War, studied medicine, taught at the Boston University Medical school, and was among the first women physicians to practice in Florida. In 1882, a student of Dr. Mary Jane Safford, Fidelia Jane Merrick Whitcomb, joined her in Tarpon Springs. Safford and Whitcomb operated the Tarpon Springs Hotel as a health resort, and were the first two female physicians to practice medicine in Florida.
