General Note
The Drew Lumber Company was established by George Franklin Drew, who also served as Florida's 12th state governor (1877-1881). In 1865, Drew built what was at that time the largest sawmill in Florida at Ellaville on the west bank of the Suwannee River in Madison County. The Drew family was also involved in the mercantile business and the railroad industry.
