The Governor
Governor Reubin O'Donovan Askew was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on September 11, 1928. He was one of six children.
In 1937, his family moved to Pensacola, where he entered the Escambia County Public School System. Reubin Askew is proud that he learned to assume responsibility at the early age of nine when he worked not only to help support himself, but contributed to the family as well. When he graduated from high school at 17, Askew entered the army as a private in the paratroopers and when separated from the service, he was a sergeant.
He then entered Florida State University where he also continued his military career by joining the ROTC. While at FSU, he was elected student body president. He graduated with a B.S. degree and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force. After to additional years of active duty in the Air Force, Captain Askew was admitted to the University of Florida Law School. In 1956, he received his LL. B. Degree.
Almost immediately, he began his public service career by accepting an appointment as Assistant County Solicitor of Escambia County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1958 and to the State Senate in 1962. He is the recipient of many honors, among them the award by the State Jaycees as "One of Floria's Five Outstanding Young Men, 1960"; election by the Legislative Press Corps as "One of the Ten Outstanding House Members, 1961"; "One of the Fourt Outstanding Senators in 1965 and 1967 Senates," and runner up in the St. Petersburg Times Poll for "Most Valualble Member in 1965 Senate."
In the Senate, Askew was Chairman of the Appropriations Committee and the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendments and Revision and worked vigourously for fair apportionment in both the House and Senate.
His many community services include being a past president of the Western Division of Children's Home Society of Florida, past member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Association for Retarded Children, the Farm Bureau, Escambia County Tuberculosis and Health Association, YMCA, American Legion, Heart Association and United Fund. He is Mason and Rotarian.
He is married to the former Donna Lou Harper of Sanford, Florida and the couple has two children, Angela Adair and Kevin O'Donovan.
Governor Askew is an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Pensacola.

Tom Adams, Florida's Tenth Lieutenant Governor, is a native Floridian, born in Jacksonville on March 11, 1917. The son of a prominent attorney, his parents, Thomas B. Adams and Carolyn H. Adams, were prominent in the professional, civic, ans social life of Florida. The Adams family is direcrly descended from the Adams of Massachusetts, Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, and Samuel Adams.
Tom Adams graduated from the public schools of Jacksonville and then The Hill Prepartory School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. In 1940 he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in prelaw from the University of Michigan and later attended law school at the Univeristy of Detroi and the Univeristy of Florida. While at Michigan, he was elected to more positions of leadership and received more honors and awards than any other student in the previous history of the Univeristy.
Tom Adams is the recipient of honorary doctorate degrees from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1962 and Trinity College in 1964. He holds honorary memberships in Alpha Kappa Psi, Phi Theta Pi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Gold Key at Florida State Univeristy and Blue Key at the University of Florida. Since 1965, he has been a Trustee of the Florida Institute of Technology. In 1967, Tom Adams was awarded the Order of San Carlos by the Republic of Colombia, the highest award that nation bestows upon a foreigner. He is a member of the Baptist Church and has served as a deacon. Sunday School superintendent and teacher.
Prior to his election to the Florida Senate in 1956, Tom Adams operated a large dairy and later was engaged in timber brokerage, farming and property management. While serving in the Senate, Senator Adams was voted by his colleagues as the
Most Outstanding Freshman Senator" during the 1957 session. In the 1959 legislative session, he was honored as the "Most Valuable Member of the Legislature." During both sessions Senator Adams was elected as the "Senator Contributing Most to Agriculture."
In 1960, Tom Adams was elected Florida's Fifteenth Secretary of State. For three consecutive bienniums he was named by the Legislature and selected to received the Allen Morris Award as the "Most Effective Administrator of a State Agency."
He is married to the former Helen Frances Brown of Jacksonville. They have three daughters" Carolyn Adams DeHaven, Augusta Adams Bird, and Frances Lee Adams, as well as two granddaughters, Carolyn Lee DeHaven and Abigail Bird.
Throughout his entire career he has maintained an active and participating interest in many local, state and national civic, fraternla, and conservation groups, associations and societies, both public and private.

Richard (Dick) Stone, sixteenth Secretary of State of the State of FLorida, missed bing a Florida native by one month. Born September 22, 1928, in New York City, Stone's parents, Alfred and Lily moved to Florida in November of that Year.
In 1949 he received an A.B. Degree (cum laude) in Economics from Harvard. He then entered Columbia Univeristy Law School and was graduated from there in 1954.
Dick Stone was City Attorney for the City of Miami from 1966 through 1967 when he reisgned that position to run and was elected, to a one-year term in the Florida Senate. He was re-elected to a one-year term in the Florida Senate. He was re-elected to a four year term in 1968.
Mrs. Stone is the former Mariene Singer.
Robert L. (Bob) Shevin, Democrat, Senator 43rd District (Dade), attorney. Born January 19, 1934, Miami, Fla. Education: University of Florida, B.A., 1955. University of Miami, Juris Doctor, 1957, Magna Cum Laude. Souther Collegiate Debate Champion, Florida Blue Key, Hall of Fame, president Student Bar Association, president Bar and Gavel Legal Society, State Moot Court CHampion. Married Myrna Bressack, Miami. Children: Laura, Hilary, Harry. Church: Jewish, Military Service. U.S. Army Reserve, Captain. Affiliations: Florida State Committee on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice, Iron Arrow honorary. Legislative Service: House of Representatives, 1964-1966. Elected to Senate 1866, re elected 1967, 1968. Highlights: Allen Morris award "Most Outstanding First Session Member 1965 House of Represenatives"; selected by Florida Jaycees as Outstanding Young Man of Florida 1969.
Fred O. (Bud) DIckinson, Jr., 25th Comptroller of Florida, was born in West Palm Beach on March 28, 1922.
He was educated in Palm Beach County schools, the University of Florida and Stetson University College of Law. He is a decorated Marine veteran.
Comptroller Dickinson served in the House and Senate. He was twice elected Comptroller by history making margins. He organized The Florida Council of 100 and is Vice President of his National Association.
Comptroller Dickinson has projected Florida's fiscal soundness and economic strength and growth in New York and other major domestic and foreign money markets. He has received national recognition as a fiscal leader in State Government.
Comprtoller Dickinson and his wife, the former Mildred (Boots) Goddard, have five children.
Thomas D. O'Malley will serve as Florida's 18th State Treasuerer following a family tradition of public service. He is the grandson of the former Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin and the son of Thomas D. O'Malley, St., a former United States Congressman.
Born in Washington D.C., in 1933 Tom O'Malley enlisted in the Marine Corps, servicng as a sergeant in Korea at 18.
In 1964, two years after receiving his LL.B. from the University of Miami, he took office as a Dad County Commissioner. Re-elected without opposition in 1968, he also served as Vice Mayor of Metropolitan Dade County.
Active in many civic clubs and professional associations, the Miami attorney is married to the former Mary J. Aquilina; they have three children: Thoas Anthony, 15; Susan Ann, 13 and Timothy Patrick, 11.
Floyd T. Christian, national education leader, is Florida's 16th Chief State School Officer.
Christian has served as teacher, school administrator and superintendent of public instruction in Pinellas County, becoming Florida's first appointive county superintendent in 1957. He held his position until appointed to his present office in October 1965 to complete the unexpired terms of Thomas D. Bailey, who resigned. Christian has twice been re-elected. His career as an educator was interrupted by five years of distinguished service World War II.
Christian is president of the COuncil of Chief State School Officers and holds honorary memberships in many national organizations- National Education Association, National Congress of Parents and Teachers and many others.
Born in Bessemer, Alabama, 1914. Father of three.
Doyle Conner is Florida's Seventh Commissioner of Agricultre. He was born in Starke, Florida on December 17, 1928
Commissioner Conner attended Bradford County schools and is a graduate of the University of Florida.
In 1950 at the age of 21, he was elected to the House of Representatives. At the age of 28, Doyle Conner became the youngest person to serve as Speaker of the House.
Doyle Conner was first elected Commissioner of Agriculture in 1960 and he has been re elected at each subsequent election.
Commissioner Conner was honored recently when he was elected president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and president of the University of Florida Alumni Association.
Mrs. Conner is the former Johnnie Bryany Bennett of Marianna. They have three children.
