Ocala Feb 12/08 The total number of names on the registration list for the "Wet and Dry" election held in Marion county for the year 1908 were 1368 negroes and 1981 whites. There were 1184 blacks qualified and who could have voted; and 822 who actually voted, there were 1825 white qualifed and who could have voted 1438 of whom voted. There were 180 votes thrown out in the entire county. Estimation that 100 of these were black and 80 white; This leaves 722 black votes and 1348 white votes counted in the returns. I have gotten the names of every person who voted and gone over them in each district with well informed parties who know almost to a certainty how the negroes voted and I feel certain that not more than 100 out of the 722 blacks counted voted dry. This leaves 622 negroes counted in the returns who voted wet. In all there were 1067 wet votes which gives the wet side 445 white votes and the dry side 913 white votes; and the wet side 622 negro votes and the dry side 100 black votes. The bar-room people paid over $2400 for poll taxes, they paid practically the polls for all the negroes and for many whites, most of the negroes were paid for two years, they paid on at least 150 negroes who were not registered.
